Application modernization is entering a new phase as US enterprises look for ways to address legacy systems while preparing their technology estates for artificial intelligence.
Traditional modernization programs can involve lengthy discovery processes, manual code analysis and extensive testing before an organization can begin moving an application to a new architecture. AI is changing parts of that process by helping engineering teams understand existing systems and automate portions of modernization work.
The shift is becoming more important as enterprises move AI beyond experimentation. Deloitte’s 2026 State of AI in the Enterprise report found that 34% of organizations are already using AI to deeply transform products, services, processes or business models. The study surveyed 3,235 leaders across 24 countries.
For modernization teams, this means the target architecture also needs to be AI ready. Applications need to connect with modern data platforms, cloud infrastructure and AI services while maintaining the security and governance requirements of enterprise environments.
Top AI modernization companies in the US
Sonata Software has developed an AI enabled modernization approach that combines AI agents with human engineering expertise. Its Frontier Workbench can support discovery, reverse engineering, code generation, testing and deployment as organizations move from legacy technology stacks toward modular, cloud native architectures.
The company has also developed specific approaches for .NET modernization across AWS and Azure. In one engagement with a US based mortgage lender and servicer, Sonata used Amazon Q, AWS Transform, GitHub Copilot and generative AI to upgrade a legacy loans platform from .NET 4.x to .NET 8. The company reports a 30% reduction in time and effort alongside performance gains of up to five times.
Sonata’s broader modernization portfolio connects application engineering with cloud, data and AI. The company was also recognized as a Microsoft Frontier Partner in March 2026 for capabilities spanning Cloud & AI Platforms, AI Business Solutions and Security, strengthening its position around AI first modernization.
